PLA (polylactic acid) is a general-purpose bio-based thermoplastic for open-air 3D printing. Derived from renewable sources, such as corn, cassava, sugarcane, cereals, or sugar beets, PLA thermoplastic is biodegradable under the right conditions, giving it a low environmental impact.
PLA is a 3D printer filament that is easier to use than other polymers and can be printed at low to moderate temperatures, resulting in higher productivity on FFF 3D printers. Its mechanical properties, as well as other final properties, vary widely depending on 3D printing conditions such as extruder temperature, extrusion speed, cooling system, etc. Compared to other polymers used for 3D printing, PLA exhibits much less warping and shrinkage. For this reason, it can be successfully printed in an open environment without a dedicated cooling system. For applications with higher humidity (above 98%) and higher temperatures (above 60°C), other polymers, such as Pro HT and PETG from BigRep, are recommended.
Filaments must remain sealed when stored for extended periods to prevent moisture absorption from the air. High humidity can impair extrusion quality, causing clogged nozzles and causing bubbles and spatter.
BigRep PLA is FDA compliant for food safety and meets the requirements of EU Food Contact Directives.
